So Mattel (Fisher Price) has come out with the new Thomas & Friends Wood – a replacement of the very popular Thomas & Friends Wooden Railway. The new designs have far fewer details than the old Wooden Railway models. The fans have been very disappointed. Not sure of the reasons for the changes, but it seems this will only further contribute to the demise of Mattel & Thomas Toys.
Why the change? The wooden railway line has been so popular for 25+ years. The lack of paint is very disappointing. Is the paint missing for a savings of cost? safety concern? Who know? The only good things is they did not change the magnets to the cheap plastic couplers and the faces on the characters seem good. Other than that, there is been great outrage from the fans in the short time my video has been posted.
Where will Mattel go from here?
We got these direct from Fisher Price (we paid for them). Percy’s Chocolate Crunch and Thomas Breakaway Bridge sets. In the video we also discuss possible uses for our Batman stickers from DK Books Ultimate LEGO Batman Movie Sticker Collection
This set has been a lot of fun and we are going to do more with it. We have built a lot of the Fisher Price Track Master (2) Thomas the Tank Engine and Friends sets, but this has been our favorite! I know train jumps and elevators and steep inclines are ridiculous, but it is Thomas who is a talking train! So who cares? It is great fun!
We have already used the A-Team in some of our videos with this. But the one TV show that we plan to adapt using this is the Dukes of Hazzard. What better than a show with ridiculous car jumps?
This is the 3rd time I have got a trackmaster set with a missing drive rod – all were Thomas.
The wooden railway collection grows. More on the way…
In the video we show the new Streamlined Emily (her dream in Start Your Engines) as well as a regular Emily from Fisher Price Thomas Wooden Railway. Use the Steam Push Train to help Emily(s) around the track plus show our other Emily Models. Bachmann HO Scale is still my favorite.
I am starting to see why people love the wooden railway series for Thomas & Friends. While the motorized versions are VERY slow, the whole system is still easy to use and fun. Great for kids of all ages. Biggest drawback is the expense. The motorized units are around $35. But with careful searching on Amazon, eBay, and waiting for sales at Toys R Us, deals can be found.
